Healing Racial Trauma in Children

Healing Racial Trauma in Children

Dr. Akindotun Merino defined trauma and historical trauma. She spoke of trauma responses and ways to build resilience. Some of the take homes are: be their safe place, allow the child to flourish based on their own merit, advocate for them, and give them a sense of identity and purpose.

Dr. Merino is a Mental & Behavioral Health Commissioner in California. She is a Family Psychologist and Professor of Psychology. Dr Merino is also the President of Jars Education Group which provides mental health research, training, advocacy & treatment. Choose F.A.I.T.H

Choose F.A.I.T.H

Welcome to Take 5, the 5-min broadcast with Toyin Fasosin. In light of the covid-19 pandemic, Choose F.A.I.T.H!

A few days ago we made a choice to Say No to F.E.A.R!

Today we Choose F.A.I.T.H! – Faith

F for Face your fears: write out exactly what you fear and ways to mitigate the effects. Are you afraid you’ll get infected? Write down ways to reduce your risk: proper hand washing, social distancing, adequate sleep, exercise and other things to boost your immunity

A for Adapt: to adapt means to modify/adjust based on changing circumstances. Be flexible, things are pretty fluid right now as updates come from the government. Social distancing and shelter in place directives do not equate to isolation, stay connected via phone, video calls, text etc

I for Influence: be a positive role model in your world. Be an encourager and a support. People are sensitive to panic or fear expressed by those around them especially family. Fear is contagious, so is calm. Model calm as a caregiver or authority figure especially with your young children

T for Take charge: take charge of the things you can control. Take charge of your thoughts (be positive) take charge of your emotions (focus on things and people you love), take charge of your body (eat right, get adequate sleep, exercise)

H for Hope: a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. Hope for a favorable outcome. Yes, take preventive measures, practice safety and self-care, follow government directives, go through the course of treatment BUT keep expecting it to end well. Are you practicing social distancing? look forward to the day when the tide will turn and there will be an easing off of restrictions, are you in quarantine? Expect to be cleared. Are you diagnosed with covid-19? Expect to recover.

Keep on keeping on So, remember to Choose F.A.I.T.H! Face your fears, Adapt, Influence, Take charge & Hope
